Peritoneal and omental rule 4: D.D. between ascites and pleural effusion

When you are looking to CT cross sectional anatomy at the level of the diaphragm, you can find a space anterior to it and another one posterior to it.
The anterior word start with A, and ascites start also by A, so anterior space to the diaphragm is the site where the ascites present. Note also that this area is separated from spine by the bare area of the liver on the right side and that of the spleen on the left side which means that ascites never reach to the spine.
While posterior word start with P, and pleural effusion also start with P, so posterior space to the diaphragm is the site where the pleural effusion present. Note here that the pleural effusion can reach to the spines instead of ascites which cannot be reaching due the bare area present.
